    • Read them all and... - Yair - 2006-07-29 11:45:12pm

I feel somewhere between [PL]TV's excitement and Jeremy's disappointment.

There are quite a few great ones that will compete for my high points.

But the winner will most likely come from the semis, and the Estonian Cowgirl almost definitely from the final. Just like last year.

      • Incidently this season's slogan at [PL]TV is: Exciment comes natural [R] - [PL]TV HoD - 2006-07-29 11:51:56pm
      • Not a big surprise ... see above ;) - Thomas still pissadancing - 2006-07-30 12:27:31am

It's a strong final - the overall level is better than last year's, but certainly not due to the straight finalists.

Some of the new stuff is astonishingly uninspired ...

      • I totally agree [R] - Pete D - 2006-07-30 9:35:18am

Hmpf!! I'm a bit annoyed!
Posted by [PL]TV HoD on 2006-07-29 11:08:46pm

That I can't voice neither my dissappointment, nor my joy.

So that leaves me only to congratulate the qualifiers and those in particular who got high points from me!

And I hope that the writers of my top 10 who didn't qualify will make and entry next year!

Hugz to all, congrats to each! :-)

I think there's nothing wrong with voicing your disappointment? - Ben NL - 2006-07-29 11:20:35pm

those songs are out after all? I was pretty happy with the results, I only miss 'Ugly girl' and especially 'Je t'adore' (by coincidence two nearly lyricless songs) in the final :-)

Hi guys. Just looked at the ALC entries for the first time and the winner will be...

    • LOL bad boy! - Yair - 2006-07-30 12:20:32am

Remember Alp predicted Chernobyl last year, and nobody believed him!

  • I hope not ;-) lol. (sorry) [R] - Jonas - 2006-07-30 3:13:05am

Well, I (kinda) caught up with you all.
Posted by Frank on 2006-07-30 12:27:02am

First of all, fun shows, Harrow, great job, loved the little green ball and the Guildo slider :)

As for the qualifiers:
Quite happy with semi 1, though I'm missing some of my favs (don't know if I'm allowed to say which ones).

Very surprised by semi 2 though, the majority I didn't vote for and I'm missing quite some very clever and very well-written ones.

Semi 3 mainly delivered what I expected and hoped, but for one, which surprises me (again).

I only quickly browsed through the final ones. There's some gems and some others, as every year, but it's too early (or too late) to say :)

  • Of course you are allowed ... anyone else already mourned about their lost loves. - Thomas let me dry, let me dry!!! - 2006-07-30 12:30:27am

And I repeat it over and over again: "Let Me Dry" and "Je T'Adore" were robbed!!! :(((((

Almost entirely happy with the rest of the qualifiers, though - they certainly outshine most of the straight finalists.

    • Oh, in that case - Frank - 2006-07-30 12:41:53am

Some of my missing favs were (in no particular order) the not flawless but very inspired Brain, the extremely clever Di Di Da (probably the one that was hardest to do too) and the sweet and cheeky Pissadansen among a couple of others that may not have been rofl rofl but very well done nonetheless.

I see that there's lots of talk on Je t'adore. I liked that one very much, it was funny and oh so clever, but also oh so short:)

      • ... well, let's wait for revelation night then ;) [R] - Thomas ... let me dry!!! - 2006-07-30 1:03:18am
  • Me too, I just got home :) - Jortsu - 2006-07-30 12:55:43am

Very pleased because my two favourites from Semi 1 and Semi 3 made it.
*Very* shocked about the results of Semi 2.
I'm especially missing "Mmm... Brain" and "I Sue" among the qualifiers :(

And well done Harrow, fantastic shows :)

    • Hey Jordi! You ready for some mail? :) [R] - Harrow - 2006-07-30 12:59:09am
      • From you? Always :) [R] - Jortsu - 2006-07-30 1:00:04am
        • sent :) [R] - Harrow - 2006-07-30 1:27:38am
          • Got it :) - Jortsu - 2006-07-30 1:42:56am

            ;-)

    • You never fail to surprise me, my friend ... - Thomas ... let me dry!!! - 2006-07-30 1:08:04am

... I can't believe there is actually someone who likes both "Mmm ... Brain" and "I Sue"!

Both did reasonably well, though, qualifying was a tough thing to do this year!

      • You are sometimes wrong :) - Frank - 2006-07-30 1:11:26am

I didn't mention it, but I sue is one I quite enjoyed too :)

        • I am rarely right ... - Thomas ... let me dry!!! - 2006-07-30 1:19:16am

... two of my three favourites which are "out" I expected to be from you.

And if you had written "Let Me Dry", it would have been obvious you enjoyed "I Sue" - these two are twins separated at birth, children of Hysteria and Obsession.

          • All will be revealed in a week's time :)) [R] - Frank - 2006-07-30 1:22:23am
            • Yes ... but if I was right, expect a major protest march to blow up the board that night! [R] - Thomas ... let me dry!!! - 2006-07-30 1:26:12am
              • ROFL! [R] - Frank - 2006-07-30 1:43:24am
      • LOL! ;) - Jortsu - 2006-07-30 1:11:35am

Yep, we tend to disagree when it comes to MB contests (except the MB BB2) ;))
But I agree with you about the appeal of the "Culinary" stuff, I much preferred "Let me dry" ;)
Hope you were lucky and qualified, though :)

I'm not in the final...buaaaaa
Posted by Kenny on 2006-07-30 12:51:49am

(Sigh) Dear all, I entered the funny ALContest and I scored really bad...my song was in semi1 and have to admit that the qualifiers really surprised me in semi1...didn't expect to see those...well maybe Culinary and Hertz, which are brilliant. Semi2 and Semi3 results are expected and now I still have to check out the final ones, but my vote doesn't count now, does it? (sigh)

  • If you entered your vote counts, no matter if you qualified or not. [R] - Yair - 2006-07-30 12:56:26am
    • hmm...is it gonna be sumed with the rest non-qualifiers, or my points will directly be added to the scoreboard? [R] - Kenny - 2006-07-30 12:59:54am
      • you get to give 12, 10, 8-1 points out yourself :) [R] - Harrow - 2006-07-30 1:00:55am
  • But semi 1 got the most obvious result ... - Thomas ... let me dry!!! - 2006-07-30 1:06:08am

... all the potential winners have made it. And one day someone will have to explain to me what's so brilliant about this "Culinary" stuff. This MB must be somewhat obsessed with fridges! My favourite object in the household is the washing machine, maybe that's the problem.

    • LOL! I don't get its greatness either :-) [R] - Jeremy - 2006-07-30 1:07:50am
    • hehe, I dunno, it was just fondues that blew me off...!:) But I expected Hard Cock, Sex in the Van, nogayimpos.&torero [R] - Kenny - 2006-07-30 1:09:10am
      • Do you realise how this message looks to someone who doesn't know ALC and browses the MB? ;-) [R] - Yair - 2006-07-30 1:12:36am
        • It may shock some that do know ALC too :) [R] - Frank - 2006-07-30 1:13:38am
          • LOL!! Good night :) [R] - Yair - 2006-07-30 1:14:57am
        • LOL yeah, someone would think I'm a cock lover who like to have sex in the van while eating fondues! [R] - Kenny - 2006-07-30 1:15:52am
          • and that would be wrong, right? :) [R] - ade - 2006-07-30 9:02:42am
            • duuuh! I just liked the themes of the ALs ;) altough I have nothing against sex in vehicles [R] - Kenny - 2006-07-31 12:25:45am
      • "Sex In A Van" was a hoot and very catchy, but the porn stuff did not really do that well this year ... - Thomas ... let me dry!!! - 2006-07-30 1:15:15am

... I do feel somewhat sorry for "No Gay Impossible", though. It's such a fab parody of one of the most ridiculous aspects of gay self-glorification.

"Hard Cock" would have qualified in any other semi (but without a chance to score in the final, it's a solid entry, but not as funny as it pretends to be ;), "Van" had a great chorus, but relied too much on rudeness in other parts and "Torero" was too perverted to collect mainstream votes, I suppose ;)

    • If anyone submits "Clothes In Dryer" (DEN 83) next year, it won't be me. [R] - Iznibz - 2006-07-30 1:13:08am
      • OMG ... I would have killed for that idea! [R] - Thomas ... let me dry!!! - 2006-07-30 1:13:46am
    • Nah, I don't get the culinary thing either - it seems almost too easy to list foodstuffs [R] - Pete D - 2006-07-30 9:34:36am
      • One of the most clever foodtheme songs was treated badly though! [R] - Frank - 2006-07-30 1:07:54pm

OK, without giving anything away here...
Posted by Richard_CT on 2006-07-30 1:25:29am

... I did better this year than last year!

But oddly, the entry that I spent an hour on got more points than the one that took me a week!

  • Without giving anything away here ... - Thomas ... let me dry!!! - 2006-07-30 1:28:20am

... the entry I spent 30 minutes on and hardly changed during the following weeks did better than the ones that I constantly tried to improve!

And yes, I did better than last year ... it could have hardly been worse, though.

    • Weird, isn't it? [R] - Richard_CT - 2006-07-30 1:29:44am
      • Not sure ... - Thomas ... let me dry!!! - 2006-07-30 1:31:38am

... what comes easy might be more inspired!

    • The entry I spent weeks on, did get through :-) [R] - Jonas - 2006-07-30 3:21:23am
  • Same here. The one I spent the most time on didn't even come close to qualifying :-( [R] - Jeremy - 2006-07-30 1:47:59am
  • Yeah, me too! I spent *HOURS* lovingly fitting my less-successful one to the melody. [R] - Pete D - 2006-07-30 9:33:35am

And before I am out going downtown again, a big round of applause for our ...

Well done again, I really appreciate it.

And isn't it nice to watch such a charming little ditty about you reaching the final?

  • Yes it was!! :) - Harrow - 2006-07-30 1:37:55am

That was one of the few I was cheering for that made it through :)

    • and thankyou! Go get pissed and have a great time! :) [R] - Harrow - 2006-07-30 1:38:28am
  • Clap, clap, clap! :) [R] - Frank - 2006-07-30 1:42:26am
  • Love the guy, not so the AL :-) [R] - Jeremy - 2006-07-30 1:43:11am
    • Oh, it's cute ... - Thomas ... let me dry!!! - 2006-07-30 1:45:27am

... almost too cute for the brat he can be ;)

      • What makes you think that a brat wrote it? ;) [R] - Harrow - 2006-07-30 1:46:30am
        • I don't think he meant the writer when he said brat, brat :)) [R] - Frank - 2006-07-30 1:59:53am

... am I allowed to say which one?

  • Well it seems others have mentioned it too so I am joining in!!! [R] - juliejWHAMBAMBOOM!!!! - 2006-07-30 12:27:00pm
    • Sure you can, it's not like you can be evicted for discussing it or anything ;-) [R] - TomofLondon - 2006-07-30 12:27:46pm
      • It's not as if we have to agree either :) - Frank - 2006-07-30 12:54:29pm

        I most certainly don't :)

        • If it's the one I think it is, me neither! - Sild - 2006-07-30 12:59:13pm

But I am surprised how mainstream my opinion on "Je t'adore" turned out to be, it was one of my big faves in semi 2, but I never imagined it would come close to quailifying! Maybe my opinions aren't as different as I've suspected, after all!

          • I'm not sure - Frank - 2006-07-30 1:03:14pm

I seem to be "in trend" with some, but on the other hand some of my bigger favs did very bad.

  • The weird thing is that I find it almost impossible to spot the finalists ... - Thomas ... let me dry!!! - 2006-07-30 12:49:23pm

... I've got some suspects, sure, but some semi songs are so much more "them" than the final ones.

    • It seems to me many tried to maximise the number of their entries in the final... - Timoteus - 2006-07-30 12:56:26pm

...by not placing their best text there automatically. The automatic finalists are IMO no better than they were last year even though now you needed to have a good result (and not just a participation) the previous year to get one.

      • Yes, looks like it. [R] - Frank - 2006-07-30 12:59:22pm
      • If you are an automatic qualifier, that's the way to go though, surely???? [R] - juliejWHAMBAMBOOM!!!! - 2006-07-30 1:33:58pm
        • If you want to be Estonian Cowgirl, yes :) [R] - Harrow - 2006-07-30 1:39:32pm
          • LOL! :) [R] - Timoteus - 2006-07-30 3:02:54pm
      • Definitely ... I admire them for taking the risk, though [R] - Thomas ... let me dry!!! - 2006-07-30 1:35:00pm
    • But we don't know for sure who the ten direct finalists are - RogerF - 2006-07-30 1:01:28pm

Did Carly & Rich write an entry together, or have they got separate entries? Did all 10 enter songs? If one or more declined we could have some unexpected direct finalists, with Jeremy as first reserve.

Having said that, I agree, given that the 10 are who they should be, it is very hard to match entry with finalist!

Interesting.... of the semi qualifiers,

only six were songs from this year, and all were Angel-Chiara's!

Ooops... make that 7! [R] - Richard_CT - 2006-07-30 1:28:20pm

What? Zombie song did not make it to ALC final :(((((

There is something i still don´t get in the ALC finalists.
Posted by LoboinMadrid on 2006-07-30 1:47:44pm

Is it supposed that the best skilled ALCers of 2005 (Yair, Fulingen, Rich, Jonas, Carly, Frank, Aviad, Timoteus, Nigel and Roger) wrote some of the worse 2006 entries?
In my opinion there are two great entries in that group, but the rest...

  • I know, I'm quite puzzled as well [R] - Alexander-NL - 2006-07-30 1:48:57pm
  • It's quite strange, indeed ... but as mentioned before, it is likely their best entries qualified through the semis... [R] - Thomas ... let me dry!!! - 2006-07-30 1:53:30pm
  • we all have our good days and bad days, Lobo. and, as was mentioned before.. - carly hungers for brains - 2006-07-30 1:54:09pm

sometimes the strategy was to send the 'better' song to the semis.

who knows how many of the semi entries that got through are *also* written by the direct qualifiers?

    • My point is: - LoboinMadrid - 2006-07-30 1:56:12pm

If you have proven to be one of the best competitors in 2005, why entering an (obviously) worse entry in 2006? I think it wasn´t compulsory to enter 3 songs, right? Never heard of reputation?
      :-)

    • Oh, I'm sure the final is loaded with last year's top tenners! [R] - Thomas ... let me dry!!! - 2006-07-30 1:58:57pm
  • Weell...maybe we dind't send our best ones straight to the final :-) [R] - Jonas - 2006-07-30 1:55:59pm
    • Whay sending a bad one for starters? [R] - LoboinMadrid - 2006-07-30 1:56:34pm
      • For practice. :-P And because there's no way of knowing what works and what doesn't in the end. - Timoteus - 2006-07-30 2:49:50pm

Personally, I only had one good entry last year and even that was one of those rewarded for the idea rather than rewarded for the witty style of writing. It's very possible I don't have a single good entry this time. After all, if I happen to lack an idea... %-)

And reputation? What reputation? We have a reputation? %-O

        • Some of us, yes [R] - LoboinMadrid - 2006-07-30 2:55:28pm
          • Including moi, to which I may not have lived up *sorry* ;o))) [R] - Alexander-NL - 2006-07-30 3:00:03pm
            • Yay! :-) [R] - LoboinMadrid - 2006-07-30 3:04:45pm
    • That'd be a seriously stupid move. lol - Alexander-NL - 2006-07-30 2:00:10pm

Especially for you, as you saw the advantage "Smoke?" got by being a new fab entry. Direct final entries can pile up at the bottom yes, but to do that they have to be worse than stuff in the semi. And by entering exactly that you *will* pile up in the bottom of the final, something people will remember more than if you have one less entry in the final and one that ended halfway in a semi. That's just my view. :o)

And yes, I do think that some of those who qualified are direct finalists. :o) Because they're genius and very hard to beat when at their best. :o)

  • I think there's at least 4 that are worthy of the final, myself :) [R] - Harrow - 2006-07-30 1:56:19pm
    • I spotted two, but then again I'm quite happy to be able to shower my semi favourites with points now. [R] - Thomas ... let me dry!!! - 2006-07-30 2:12:21pm
  • Maybe last year was a fluke :-) - RogerF - 2006-07-30 1:59:47pm

but remember I came 18th, so that isn't really a guarantee of greatness anyway :-)

    • and the son only came 8th in it's semi :) [R] - Harrow - 2006-07-30 2:04:18pm

"Harrow knows why it's even more typical."

And I think now we know that one of the entries that came 7th, was yours? ;-)

  • 7th, 8th, 9th, 10th... whatever. :o)) [R] - Alexander-NL - 2006-07-30 1:55:52pm
    • LOL Alex, soon we know which one of us did worse ;))) [R] - suomigirl - 2006-07-30 1:57:02pm
      • 8th ... "Promotour" ;) [R] - Thomas ... let me dry!!! - 2006-07-30 1:58:08pm
        • oh, yeah, that' gotta be it ;-) [R] - Jonas - 2006-07-30 1:58:35pm
          • Alexander will be pleased with the result, though, once the authors have been revealed ;) [R] - Thomas ... let me dry!!! - 2006-07-30 2:00:23pm
            • OK, so now we know that you had an entry that placed lower than "promotour" in that semi? ;-) [R] - Jonas - 2006-07-30 2:01:06pm
              • Do you really think he hates me that much? :( [R] - Thomas ... let me dry!!! - 2006-07-30 2:03:42pm
                • LOL, who knows? ;-) [R] - Jonas - 2006-07-30 2:05:53pm
                • lol!!! *No comment* ;o))) [R] - Alexander-NL - 2006-07-30 2:06:25pm
        • Suuure... ;o)) [R] - Alexander-NL - 2006-07-30 2:01:55pm

And now that Jeremy isn´t around...

I don´t know how his real entries went in the voting, but i´m sure that "Leavin'" and "Superbra" would have been easily in the final.

  • Definatly Superbra [R] - Jonas - 2006-07-30 2:21:27pm
The authors of at least 2 ALC finalists are so obvious to me.....LOL, it's as if they're saying to me in person :-) - Jeremy - 2006-07-30 4:09:25pm
  • Only one is obvious to me. :-P [R] - Timoteus - 2006-07-30 4:37:56pm
    • Your own? :-) [R] - Jonas - 2006-07-30 4:52:04pm
      • Yes. :-) [R] - Timoteus - 2006-07-30 5:09:55pm
  • I don't think any is obvious, but I have my guesses for all of them ;-) - Jonas - 2006-07-30 4:50:42pm

And I don't understand why people have been complaining about the finalists either... I think there's one really brilliant in there (and no, it's not the one that's been talked a lot here) and I suspect it's the entry of last year's winner ;) Then there's another 4-5 that are really good too and would have deserved to go to the final from a semi-final...

    • The quality isn't all that bad indeed but people had higher expectations for obvious reasons. [R] - Timoteus - 2006-07-30 5:11:04pm
    • I have to say some are already growing on me ... [R] - Thomas ... let me dry!!! - 2006-07-30 5:17:44pm
      • Indeed, it's not really fair to judge them all until they are as familiar as the semi entries imo :) [R] - Harrow - 2006-07-30 5:27:32pm
        • I've already pretty much decided my votes!!!!!!!!!!!!!! [R] - juliejWHAMBAMBOOM!!!! - 2006-07-30 5:28:59pm
          • You're fast! My 12 is decided, but - Yair - 2006-07-30 5:33:38pm

5 entries are fighting for my 10
3 entries are fighting for my 4
and 4 entries (all I gave 8/10!) are fighting for my 1 point.

This means three songs of 8/10 will not get points from me at all!

            • I go on initial reactions and there are some semi songs I know I don't need to bother with again [R] - juliejWHAMBAMBOOM!!!! - 2006-07-30 5:36:02pm
          • 2 sets of votes already received - you're not alone! :) [R] - Harrow - 2006-07-30 5:44:16pm
            • Oooh so I got the silver? :o)) [R] - Alexander-NL - 2006-07-30 6:37:53pm
        • I haven't even listened and sung to them yet ... that's the decisive factor anyway. [R] - Thomas ... let me dry!!! - 2006-07-30 5:40:19pm
  • Have you spotted mine Jer?! You're not going to deprive me of your 12 this time are you?! LOLOL :-))) [R] - Luke - 2006-07-30 8:25:08pm
    • I actually thought that one of my 12's in the semis was your song. Didn't qualify tho :-( [R] - Jeremy - 2006-07-30 8:29:02pm
      • ROFL!!! You were my only hope of a 12.... - Luke - 2006-07-30 8:36:38pm

...and yet I made it anyway - couldn't have been more surprised - from comments here about what people were voting for I'd totally written myself off! Sorry Harrow, I should have kept my mouth shut but it's my birthday and I'm sloshed! LOLOL :-)))

OK, finally got around to reading all the entries...

Title:

I think, average-wise, the direct-to-final entries as a group are considerably better than any of the semis. I mean, if you compare the final entries just to the ones that got through the semis, that's not really fair. You're only getting the cream of the crop there. If you compare just the new 10 to any of the 3 semis, though, I think it comes out on top on average. At least, in any case the worst songs aren't nearly as bad as the worst songs in the semis.

  • I totally agree - the competition is really tough but I thought the finalist certainly have done their entries very well [R] - [PL]TV HoD - 2006-07-30 7:15:26pm
  • Average wise they're comparable to what I've seen in the midtable semi entries. The semi qualifiers for the most part - Jeremy - 2006-07-30 7:20:56pm

    are far superior imo

Maybe with another few reads some of 'em will grow on me, but for now that's how I see it

    • i think there's some confussion here - rich - 2006-07-30 8:02:11pm

People voted for the top 18 songs last year, not for the top 10 people. It stands to reason that the 18 (semi qualifying) songs that people so adore now are better than the 10 direct finalists.

For the best songs to emerge as direct finalists you need to send the best song WRITERS (not the most popular, voted-for songs!) as direct finalists. The only way to do that is to reward individuals for consistently well written songs, which you cannot do because you do not accrue points from each year's contest. Thus, you are selecting the direct qualifiers on the basis of one event--and a sample size of 1 is unreliable :)

For all those who fear not intellectual conversation, the proof is in "the law of large numbers," to the extent that each song's success in the preceding year is an independent, chance-based event.

      • Even the best song WRITERS as you put it can send total stinkers...as we'll no doubt see next wknd :-) [R] - Jeremy - 2006-07-30 8:12:22pm
        • yes, that's my point
