Pre-Selection

Due to the large numbers of countries wishing to enter, a pre-selection was held before the Eurovision Contest itself. In this pre-selection, tapes of all of the entry songs were sent to juries from each country, who then had to vote on them.

  • Where? The 1996 Pre-selection took place completely behind closed doors, at private votings in each participating country.
  • When? 20th-21st March, 1996.
  • Winner? The top 22 countries in the pre-selection qualified for the Eurovision Song Contest itself, along with automatic qualifiers (the hosts) Norway. The unlucky countries to miss out were Denmark, Germany, Hungary, Israel, Macedonia, Romania and Russia.

*Though Finland and Hungary got the same number of points, Finland qualified for the Eurovision Song Contest proper due to it's higher number of 12 points.
