* The top 10 countries (excluding the "Big 4") qualify automatically for the final in 2005. Croatia miss out despite finishing level on points with Malta, who take the last qualifying place, as they recieved votes from less countries.

The Semi

Due to the large numbers of countries wishing to enter, a live Semi-Final was held before the Eurovision Contest itself. In this semi final, 22 countries competed for 10 places in the final.

  • Where? The 2004 Semi Final was held at the Abdi Ipekci Stadium in Istanbul, Turkey.
  • When? Wednesday 12th May, 2004.
  • Who? It was presented by Meltem Cumbul and Korhan Abay.
  • Voting Procedure? 33 of the 36 countries participating in ESC 2004 (not France, Poland and Russia) voted using televoting, and gave their top 10 the points 12,10,8,7,6,5,4,3,2 and 1. The top 10 were later announced in random order from special envelopes, and only after the final were the full results revealed, though the points of the countries missing out (places 11-22) were shown on screen at the end of the Semi.
  • Winner? The 10 songs to qualify from the Semi Final were: (in the order they were drawn) Serbia-Montenegro, Malta, the Netherlands, Albania, Ukraine, Croatia, Bosnia-Herzegovina, Macedonia, Greece and Cyprus.

*The results shown live on-screen during the semi for places 11-22 were later altered, when it was realised that Croatia had given themselves 4 points, and Monaco had not recieved enough televotes to give all their points out. Luckily, this didn't change the 10 qualifiers.
